Possible Additions to my Space Wolves Army

Greetings, Aseldi here with a brief post with some additional content which didn't really fit in the last one.

Njal, despite being the first Space Wolf model was only glued together and used for the first time last Friday at the GW lock in. From that experience, he is great fun to field. While no where near as potent as he should be, I love his lore, and the Lord of Tempest rule is great fun. Currently, I'm working a list around having him deploy by drop pod with some Wolf Guard.

I've also been looking into adding Cypher to my force. My idea behind this would be that Cypher's ultimate show of defiance against the Dark Angels would be siding with their rivals. Considering my first army was also the Dark Angels, it's got quite a personal touch to it too, and I've always loved him as a character. His rules are also pretty awesome judging by a glance, which is a bonus!

All in all though, I'm holding off adding much to my Space Wolves until the get their update, which judging by certain rumours, and the GW's current pattern, shouldn't be too long.

Game Sizes, Are They Really All That?

Hello all! Aseldi here, and with the recent release of the Apocalypse update, I thought I'd go through the significance of points sizes for Warhammer 40,000 games.

With 6th edition, a tonne of new rules were added to the pre-game setup, which add an annoying amount of time to the game when you're getting used to them. Warlord Traits, night fighting etc. This being a fixed amount of time usually, unless ignored, I've found myself playing smaller games over the last few months.

Pre-6th ed, I played normally 3000pts games.  They took pretty long, and in my opinion, felt pretty disconnected.  Very few of the units seemed to have much meaning behind their actions, with only a very select few doing anything during the battles, the rest merely becoming cannon fodder.  With that said, they did have an epic feel, with the battle swinging back and forth multiple times over the course of the game.

On the other hand, I also played quite a few 750pts battle, with just a couple of units each side.  These felt much more intimate, with each unit having to pull its weight and earning a good share of glory.  They were short, and great for a quick afternoon tournament amongst a group of friends, though they did tend to favour certain armies. (WOO! SPACE WOLVES!)

Those are the two ends of the spectrum, excluding Apocalypse, and the Battle Missions scenarios.

I usually tend to plan an army for 2000pts as an aim to buy. (as has been proven by the majority of army lists posted on the blog)  This gives a good wide pool of troops to take from for smaller games, and allows a great feel for what the army has to offer, and is capable of playing a larger game over an afternoon too!

Currently, my favourite size is probably 1250pts.  It allows at least 1 very strong unit, and the rest to be focused around this, allowing plenty of synergy and giving the army a very centralised feel. Each unit's actions are pivotal, and the games are very tactical, as units cannot be thrown away without consequence.

So what am I trying to say? Well, as a Space Wolf player, from a game I want: units to each gain glory by performing heroic feats, which can be added to a Saga written in their name (a little something I'm thinking of starting), brutal combats and the games to fairly tense, with every move being significant.  By this, I naturally vie towards the lower end of the points spectrum, between 750-1500pts.

A bit of a ramble, but it's been on my mind recently. Smaller to medium sized ones are my preference. Next time you're arranging a game, give the points limit a think, and what it will add to the game, not just the time it will take.

The Question of Selling.

Aseldi here, and I'm stuck in a rut.  I am left with increasingly less money to spend on the hobby, and have been left with multiple unfinished projects... In fact, to date, I have never actually completed one. Very few of my models are painted, a few aren't even built! And there are stacks of vanilla Marines which sit there collecting dust; remnants from my first forays into the hobby.

So now I'm left with the question: What do I do with these masses of vanilla marines sitting gathering dust? I probably won't ever use them in their current state, seeing as I far prefer the aesthetic of Space Wolves, and am trying to create a Dark Angel army based on Raven/Deathwing.  Their layout is also reflective of someone inexperienced, and the paint jobs on a couple of them... Well, i was young.

Though I hate the idea of parting with models I have bought, built, and to an extent, painted, overall I think it could be of benefit.
The money I make could be put towards getting the last bits of my 2000pts Space Wolf army, and finally purchasing the new Dark Angel Codex.  This would leave me with a far more coherent collection, and a much less daunting pile of grey to paint.

So, I put the question out to anyone who reads this blog, have you ever been in the dilemma where you have masses of models you can't see any hope of ever using? And if so, would you be in favour of selling them to fund current projects, or allow them to gather dust for years until you get round to using them?
